Florida Keys Mosquito Control

The first attempt at mosquito control in the Florida Keys dates back to 1929 when settlers built a bat tower in SugarLoaf Key. However, the bats abandoned their post instead of dining on the mosquitoes. It is said by some witty locals that the mosquitoes ate the bats! The Perky Bat Tower still stands as a reminder of challenges faced by early settlers.

Today the Florida Keys Mosquito Control District has 71 full time and 26 part time employees working to maintain and control mosquitoes in a manner that preserves and protects the ecological integrity of our scenic lands, waters and environment. Mosquito Control enhances our quality of life and allows us to enjoy our natural resources safely.
