FKMCD Wolbachia Male Mosquito Project

Newly Registered Product Tested in Real World

Beginning in June, 2025 FKMCD will carry out a small project releasing Aedes aegypti male mosquitoes infected with a bacteria called Wolbachia. Wolbachia infected male mosquitoes DO NOT BITE. The males will be released in three 20 acre sites where they will mate with local Aedes aegypti females. The Wolbachia males are unable to father viable offspring so the mosquito population in the vicinity should diminish.

The Florida Keys Mosquito Control District has previously worked with a similar type of 'novel' control measure known as Oxitec male mosquitoes.  Oxitec males are genetically manipulated to limit offspring.

Both types of 'novel' control measures essentially use the Aedes aegypti msoquito as a means to control itself. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in the Florida Keys are showing resistance to common pesticides. FKMCD has been aggressive in pursuing novel technologies to better control this species since it is known to carry dieases such as Dengue, Yellow Fever and Zika.
